LENT: A TIME INTROSPECTION AND RENEWAL

Ash Wednesday, an important date in the Catholic Church’s calendar, was prayerfully celebrated to mark the start of the Lenten season at Holy Cross Lake View SSS. This meaningful day is traditionally dedicated to contemplating the 40 days and nights that Jesus spent fasting in the desert. To honor this occasion, a solemn mass was conducted, led by Fr. Robert Ssali CSC, the Director of Studies for A Level.

In his insightful homily, Father Robert highlighted the three core elements of Lent: Fasting, Prayer, and Almsgiving. He encouraged the Congregation to view these 40 days as a chance to deepen their prayer life, seek repentance, and make positive changes. He urged students to show compassion and kindness in their interactions with others.

Additionally, he encouraged students to participate in charitable activities, assist those in need, and engage in fasting if they are able, as a form of spiritual renewal. He stressed the notion that while the body is temporary, the soul lives on forever, urging the community to nurture their souls through a life rooted in prayer. Father Ssali reminded everyone that the teachings during this period serve as a call to repent and reconnect with God.

In a poignant ceremony, ashes were placed on the foreheads of students and educators alike, serving as a reminder of human mortality. This ancient practice is grounded in the biblical saying, “For you are dust, and to dust you shall return” (Genesis 3:19). As the ashes were applied, the congregation was called to reflect on the fleeting nature of life and the significance of seeking forgiveness, mercy, and spiritual rejuvenation.

As the Lenten season unfolds, the Holy Cross Lake View community will embark on a journey of introspection, prayer, and charitable deeds. May this sacred time foster a deeper self-awareness, enhance one’s relationship with God, and renew the commitment to embody compassion and empathy, all while preparing for the joyous celebration of Easter.

This lent we shall also call to mind the words of Blessed Basile Moreau the founder of the Congregation of Holy Cross who once said

If God has given me a mind, it is so that I may know Him. If He has given me a heart free to love, it is so that I may attach myself to Him. If He has given me limbs, health, and strength, it is so that I may use them in His strength and service.
