Holy Cross Lake view wins the 2024 green schools debate championship for Busoga region

Holy Cross Lake View Secondary School, Wanyange, celebrated a major achievement on Monday, June 24, 2024, by winning the prestigious Green Schools Debate Championship, held this year at Jinja College. With a longstanding legacy in debate excellence, Holy Cross demonstrated its expertise in persuasive discourse and eloquence, securing victory through seven consecutive debate rounds against other top schools from the Busoga region.

The Green Schools Debate Championship is an annual initiative focused on raising awareness about climate change adaptation and mitigation. By engaging students in informed discussions about environmental issues, the competition aims to foster a generation equipped with the knowledge and skills to address climate challenges. This event is part of a broader climate change campaign funded by the Embassy of Sweden in Uganda and implemented by Vision Group in collaboration with the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO-Uganda).

Holy Cross Lake View’s triumph in the regional debate now advances the school to the national level, where they will compete against schools from across Uganda at Kololo Secondary School in August. Representing the Busoga Sub-region, Holy Cross will be joined by Iganga SS and Busoga College Mwiri, who placed second and third in the regional rounds, respectively.

This impressive victory not only highlights the dedication and talent of Holy Cross students but also reflects the school’s strong commitment to the principles of environmental stewardship, a value deeply rooted in its Catholic identity. Through its Laudato Si Club, Holy Cross actively engages students in the Laudato Youth Initiative, uniting young people to take action for the environment in response to the Church’s call for creation care. The initiative encourages students to serve as advocates for climate action, fostering a culture of responsibility toward our planet.

As Holy Cross students prepare for the upcoming national competition, they are driven by an unwavering commitment to uphold the school’s legacy of excellence in debate. This achievement underscores their role as responsible, informed leaders in the fight for climate action, embodying values that aim to protect and preserve the Earth.
